A dependable workflow for choosing oils, calculating lye and water, checking the formula, and recording the batch.
Start with the process
Choose cold process, hot process, or liquid soap before entering ingredients. The process determines the alkali system and affects cure or resting time.
- NaOH is normally used for solid bars.
- KOH is normally used for liquid or paste soap.
- A dual-lye formula uses both and should show each amount separately.
Build an oil formula that totals 100%
Enter oils as percentages so the formula scales cleanly. A calculator should never silently normalize an incomplete blend. Confirm the exact grade of oils such as coconut oil because SAP values can differ.
Set superfat, purity, and water
A lye discount reduces the alkali calculated for the base oils. Added superfat is a separate fat measured in addition to the base-oil weight. Enter the purity printed for your actual alkali and choose a water method you understand.
- Lye concentration describes alkali as a percentage of the full lye solution.
- Water-to-lye ratio compares water weight directly with alkali weight.
- Water as percent of oils does not adapt to changes in lye demand.
Read the result as a system
Check total oils, separate NaOH and KOH amounts, total process liquid, reactive-additive corrections, and the final pour weight. Quality indices are formulation guides, not guarantees of skin feel or finished performance.
